Flicks Lists can now be found exclusive at flickslists.com. I will be working on the website over the next couple of days (interrupted by several football games of course), but we should be good to go by the end of the day on Monday. Top Movies Update

I have generated a list of approximately 271 movies thus far. Out of this master list, I have identified 66 movies that will definitely appear in my top 100 favorite movies list. The list should be done within the next week. I know, I know, you can't wait. Well, I have some exciting news. To help me compile and rank the movies and get the list posted sooner rather than later, I have hired a research assistant. Don't worry, he will have no influence on the actual decision making process, well, at least I hope not.

Ok, I don't have a research assistant. That was a joke. But it is taking some time to get through all of these movies, and I anticipate adding more to the master list because I would be horrified if I posted my top 100 favorite movies and then realized that I didn't include a flick that is in my top 43 favorites. Then again, if I haven't identified a particular movie by now, it probably isn't one of my favorites.

Anyway, hang in there. The list will be complete soon. I still haven't figured out how I am going to reveal it, so if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. In the meantime, here is a trailer for 3:10 to Yuma (which has gotten really good reviews). Enjoy:

A List of the Best 1,000 Movies Ever?!?!

I am still working on my top 100 favorite movies list. While compiling the list, I came across this list from The New York Times - The Best 1,000 Movies Ever Made. Now, I think my list is pretty ambitious (for me at least), but 1,000 MOVIES?? Wow. Actually, the list is taken from The New York Times Guide to the Best 1,000 Movies Ever Made. The movies aren't ranked on the website (and to be honest, I don't know if they are in the book - how could they be???), but there are links to each movie, which are listed in alphabetical order. Good resource if you are looking for information on a particular movie.

Iron Man Trailer!!!!

Because I listed Iron Man as one of my most anticipated movies currently in production, I thought I would pass along this little tidbit from Superherohype.com: an Iron Man teaser trailer is coming September 10!! The teaser trailer will incorporate much of the footage revealed at Comic Con which, as you know from a previous post here, was incredible! Check out the announcement.

All Time Favorite Movies (COMING SOONer or later)

When I started this blog (almost three whole weeks ago), my intent was to come up with some unique lists of movies that you may not see on other blogs/websites (and also link to unique lists I discover elsewhere). However, I think it is important for you to get a sense of my movie watching habits/interests. I also think (hope) that if I create a list of my all-time favorite movies, it will prompt some comments and/or debate. Therefore, coming sooner or later - my all time 100 favorite movies.

The movies contained in the list will not necessarily be critically acclaimed (although there will be some of those) nor will they necessarily be popular or have made money (although there will be many of those). Rather, the movies contained in the list will be movies that I truly enjoyed and/or hold some special meaning to me.

I plan to document some of the issues that arise as I compile this list (e.g. - should movie "x" be included in the list or is it number 101?) I am also trying to decide how to reveal the list - should I include the entire list in one post or reveal one movie per post? Should I reveal the movies in order or randomly? Feel free to comment on these issues. After all, I do want audience participation (in comments and debate, not in the substance of the list itself - that's all mine).

Get Well Soon Owen

No doubt you have heard the Owen Wilson story. I am not going to get into the speculation about what happened for two reasons: 1) it's not relevant to this blog; and 2) more importantly, it's none of our business. Let's ALL respect Owen's wishes and just let him get through this. Owen, we all hope you get well soon. Now on to what this blog is about - here are my five favorite Owen Wilson movies (in no particular order):

Meet the Parents (2000)

Not technically an Owen Wilson movie, but he steals the show in several scenes as the ex-boyfriend of Gaylord "Greg" Focker's fiance.

Starsky and Hutch (2004)

How many movies have Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson appeared in together? Somebody find out. "Do it."

Armageddon (1998)

Part of an ensemble cast in one of the loudest movies ever. Its just great entertainment as far as I'm concerned. Owen's got some great lines in this flick. "That's all you had to say, scariest environment imaginable."

Bottle Rocket (1996)

Our introduction to Owen, his brother Luke and director Wes Anderson. Owen was also a co-writer with Anderson. "Why do you have tape on your nose?" "Exactly."

Wedding Crashers (2005)

Probably my favorite. Two of the "Frat Pack" at their best.

This list contains spoilers of course, but only a couple of the movies are relatively recent (You have been warned!). As always, let me know what you think and feel free to submit your own lists for consideration.

Back to Campus Movies

Well, it's that time of year again. College students head back to campus and those of us who are no longer on campus wish we were. There was nothing like the start of a new year and I miss it. In honor of the great annual migration back to school, here are my top ten college movies of all time:

10. Son in Law (1993)

Pauly Shore's shtick was funny at one time. You can't deny that. Unfortunately, this was his only decent movie (Encino Man has some redeeming qualities though). A movie about not fitting in at school, and then realizing you don't really fit in at home. Ok, it was really about using Shore's popularity at the time to make some money. They did.

9. Good Will Hunting (1997)

About a guy who should have been in college instead of being a laborer. Actually, he belonged in graduate school, or in an institution being studied. Will didn't fit in anywhere, did he? He was too smart for his friends and too smart for college. At least he finally just left it all behind. Did he ever get the girl?

8. Rudy (1993)

Sacrifice, following your dreams, football and, most importantly, college. What's not to love?

7. PCU (1994)

This is one underrated movie. Jeremy Piven is hilarious in this flick. He also appears in a movie a little further up the list. "Don't be that guy!" Ok, in this case, maybe it would be cool to be that guy.

6. Road Trip (2000)

This flick is hilarious. 'Nuff said. Blueberry pancakes anyone?

5. American Pie 2 (2001)

You may have worked hard during those summers in between semesters to earn some money, but there was also a lot of fun to be had as well. They had a lot of fun.

4. Breaking Away (1979)

Great flick and one that doesn't get mentioned enough. Another movie about not being able to fit in ANYWHERE.

3. Back To School (1986)

Next to Caddyshack, Rodney Dangerfield's best flick. "You look like the poster child for birth control." Classic.

2. Animal House (1978)

Not much needs to be said. One of the greatest comedies of all time (obviously). Featuring the greatest performance of John Belushi's career. Name one other actor who could have been cast as Bluto? You can't do it. Plus, it has one of the greatest lines in film history - "Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life son."

1. Old School (2003)

It was a close call between this flick and Animal House. Let's just say I can relate. Who wouldn't love to go back and do it again? The sight of Vince Vaughn on the rings with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth is a great cinematic moment. "You're my boy Blue!"

The End (Again)

Here is yet another list of great movie endings. This time, its a Top 50 list from Filmcritic.com. I wholeheartedly agree with a lot of the films on this list. Especially the authors' opinion about The Blair Witch Project. But, no Sixth Sense? How about some love for Saving Private Ryan?? Obviously this list contains major spoilers, so skip the flicks you haven't seen. I will be developing my own list (which will take a little time but will be worth the wait). How about getting some discussion going on the greatest movie endings? Feel free to submit your own lists. For now, enjoy this one.

It's All About the Ending

I will post flicks lists from other bloggers (if anyone wants to guest post, e-mail me) from time to time. I found this list of the Greatest Movie Endings ever over at /film. The most recent movie included in the list is Breach, which I haven't seen yet, so I obviously didn't read that description (it's No. 10). Some interesting selections. This list just goes to show you how different people are affected in different ways by movies. Check it out.

David Lee Roth - Master Marketer

Keeping with the Van Halen theme, here is a great article on David Lee Roth and the masterful job he has done marketing himself over the years. Do yourself a favor and head on over there for an interesting read.

Van Halen Reunited!

Unless you have been living under a stack of Peavy amplifiers, no doubt you have heard that David Lee Roth and Van Halen are reuniting. Well, sort of. Michael Anthony, original bassist and THE background vocal sound of Van Halen is not back (very disappointing). I am a huge Van Halen fan (both Roth and Hagar eras). I even tolerated VH III. Ok, I liked one song ("Without You").

In honor of this momentous occasion, here is my list of the top nine Van Halen references in film. If you think I should have included more, feel free to let me know.

9. Lethal Weapon 4 (1998)

Fire in the Hole from Van Halen III is featured in this movie (during one of the more ridiculous scenes in all of the Lethal Weapon movies - Riggs convinces Murtaugh to strip down to his underwear and cluck like a chicken to distract a flame throwing bad guy). Not really a reference, the song is mediocre at best, and the scene is ridiculous, but you know how I feel about the franchise, so there.

8. Back to the Future (1985)

Marty scares his teenage father into asking his teenage mother to the prom, in part, by playing a cassette marked "Edward Van Halen." Oh, yeah, and George McFly thinks Marty is an alien.

7. Twister (1996)

Might have ranked higher, but this flick didn't technically contain a "reference." Rather, Eddie and Alex contributed an instrumental to the soundtrack and Van Hagar contributes "Human's Being." One of the best Van Hagar songs.

6. Varsity Blues (1999)

"I got it bad, got it bad, got it bad, I'm hot for teacher." Weren't we all??

5. Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)

Think Eddie Van Halen would have been willing to join Wyld Stallyns?

4. Airheads (1994)

Whose side did you take in the Van Halen/David Lee Roth split?

3. Better Off Dead (1985)

A claymation hamburger playing guitar to "Everybody Wants Some." Classic.

2. Fast Times At Ridgemont High (1982)

Spicoli rescues Brooke Shields from drowning and blows the reward money by hiring Van Halen to play his birthday party. Actually, I don't think I would consider that a waste of hard earned reward money.

1. The Wedding Singer (1998)

"Now take off my Van Halen t-shirt before you jinx the band and they break up!"

Comic-Con Iron Man Footage Online Soon!?!?!

You all know that I included Iron Man in my list of most anticipated movies currently in production. I included it in that list in part based on the leaked footage shown at the San Diego Comic-Con. That footage was promptly removed. HOWEVER, it now appears that the footage will be officially released.

Indeed, according to Director John Favreau himself, Marvel and Paramount apparently have agreed to release a "version" of the footage. The footage is incredible and will obviously drum up even more hype for the flick. Keep your fingers crossed . . .

Ever wonder what the most successful movie franchises in history are? Well, here is the list.

Escape From New York

Making up for lack of posts yesterday . . .

Check out this original trailer for Escape from New York. After hearing about the remake, I watched the original again last night. This is a classic movie, with a great feel. John Carpenter at his best (well, Halloween is his best). If you've never seen it, I recommend that you do. It is dated (for obvious reasons), but well worth your time. You will be entertained.
